THE POWER OF LANGUAGE: FROM HISTORY TO THE PRESENT STATE

(STEF92 Technology, 2017, O. Kolykhalova)

The role of language is difficult to overestimate as it is the main tool of communication, both written and oral. Language ensures historical diversity. It is an important part of identity and can be observed as “a social event” (Mikhail Bakhtin). National cultures are best embodied through languages. Losing a language therefore means a loss of historical and social richness, as well as traditional values. Preservation of language provides tradition and continuity. Attitudes to language have changed over the centu...

The paper identifies the discursive strategies which shape the migrant identity in Croatia. Within such a concept, discourse is seen as a linguistic fact, an area of the social power manifestation and the ideological tool of (de)legitimation. Because of the need for identifying the ways of the construction of migrant identity and the structure of the social images (ideologies) of that vulnerable group, the emphasis is on the analysis and the problem of discourse control and changes of the migrant perception in Cro...
