GENDER DIFFERENCES IN WORK VALUES OF PHYSICIANS
Abstract
Aim: The aim of this study was to determine whether there exist differences in preferences of work values between female-physician and male-physicians. Methodology: The presented research was carried out at the turn of 2012 and 2013 in 25 randomly selected hospitals throughout the Czech Republic. The research set included a random sample of physicians working in hospitals in the Czech Republic (n = 738; female-physician = 367 (49.7%), male-physician = 371 (50.3%). The mean age of physicians was 39 years. The respondents were asked to choose on the scale of forced selection 16 factors based on modified Herzberg’s theory of motivation from the most important to the least important one, and no factor could be assigned the same value. To evaluate the differences in preferences of work values the nonparametric tests were used. Results: The research revealed that for female physician’s relations with superiors, cooperation in ward, continuing education, patient care, working conditions, information provided and employee benefits are very important, while male physicians put the emphasis on career advancement, status, recognition of personal achievements, and hospital reputation. Conclusion: Increasing proportion of female-physicians in the health sector could have a positive effect on patient care.
