Abstract

The paper deals with academic discourse as a process and product in the higher education institutions, with focus on academic writing. The introductory part of the paper contains the literature review of the linguistic background to the topic of academic writing, in particular approaches in Slovak, British, and American sources. The features and genres of academic discourse are discussed from theoretical and practical aspects, and the need for developing learners’ knowledge and skills in this area is justified. The paper is a partial outcome of the research project No. 029EU-4/2016 “Academic and Scientific Language in University Environment” during the first year of the work on the project. The core of the paper is the analysis and interpretation of respondents’ (learners and teachers) opinions of the role of academic discourse in university education, which were obtained via the questionnaire method during the first year of the work on the project. This analysis also indicates specific genres of academic writing that need to be developed in accordance with the recommendations of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) for languages as well as with the principle of good scientific practice of writing Bachelor’s and Master’s theses. Outcomes from the project will be applied in syllabus and materials development (textbooks for academic writing in English, German, French, and Spanish).
