Abstract

Introduction: The article is focused on interconnection of selected social and health characteristics with regard to the concept of quality of life and social determinants of health according to Wilkinson and Marmot. The selected characteristics include social exclusion and social support and their impact on the health of the Ukrainians living in the Czech Republic. The selected social characteristics were chosen with regard to the 10 social determinants of health: social gradient, stress, childhood, social exclusion, work, unemployment, social support, dependency, nutrition and transport. The goal of the study consisted in describing the determinants of social support and social exclusion of the respondent group of Ukrainians settled in the Czech Republic and finding connections with their health condition. Method: The study implemented a questionnaire investigation (201 questions) in form of controlled selection. The investigation took place in 2013–2014. The collected data were statistically processed with the help of SPSS version 16. The applied methods included Pearson chi-square test and Fisher exact test. After that, the individual relations were observed with the help of the analysis of adjusted residues (sign scheme). The alpha significance level was set at 5 %. Results: The selected characteristics of social support and social exclusion were researched in connection with several areas tested in relation to the selected criteria. The respondents from Ukraine, involved in the study, show a high integration potential. We cannot see any problem with integration into the majority society. The Ukrainians are not endangered by social exclusion; they live among Czech citizens and people of other nationalities.
