THE ORIGIN OF THE UDMURT DERIVATIONAL SUFFIX -SK
Abstract
This presentation examines the origin of the productive and multifunctional1 derivational suffix -?k of the Udmurt language, using the material of the Turku-Izhevsk Corpus. Two opposing views have been put forward as to the origin of this suffix: the first one posits that it is the result of the fusion of two different derivational suffixes (a reflexive and a frequentantive one), whereas the other one hypothesizes one single (frequentantive) derivational suffix from which it developed. When she posits two different derivational suffixes as the source of -?k, Bartens refers to Korhonen (1981), who studied the origins of the Udmurt -?k suffix during his investigations into the history of the Saami language. My findings demonstrate that, from the iterative-frequentative function, the verb type called ‘absolut’ reflexive by Geniušiené (the deobjective, in Haspelmath’s terms, 1990: 34), which is, in reality, an implicit transitive verb, could have developed semantically possibly – this is, most likely, the starting point for the development of further functions.
