COORDINATED REHABILITATION OF PATIENTS AFTER BRAIN DAMAGE - FIRST STUDY RESULTS

Abstract

After coming from the hospitals to their families, the patients after brain injury miss mutual cooperation of professionals from social and health sphere - i.e. application of principles of coordinated rehabilitation (including timeliness, continuity, comprehensiveness, coordination, availability, individual and psychological approach and repeated inter-professional assessment). The missing mutual cooperation of professionals from social and health sphere hinders a coordinated and comprehensive rehabilitation of such persons and slows down their return to normal life. The research of the given issue is implemented within the successfully accepted project at the Faculty of Health and Social Studies, called Coordinated rehabilitation of patients with brain injury (reg. No. GAJU 138/20146/S), funded by the Grant Agency of the University of South Bohemia. The article is aimed at presenting the first results of the project, the first goal of which consists in ascertaining the quality of life of patients after brain injury and the second in solving the health and social situation with involvement of a multidisciplinary team that will assess comprehensively the situation of the patient after brain injury, suggest solutions and implement them in cooperation with the patient and his/her family (or possibly with other institutions). The project makes use of the qualitative research strategy - particularly dialogue with the patients and their families, as well as of the quantitative technique of data collection - the WHODAS II and FIM tools objectifying the development of the condition of the patients involved in the study. After the completion of the data collection, the project output will consist in proposals for improvement of the situation through application of approaches in coordinated rehabilitation - from the perspective of individual professions - i.e. physiotherapy, occupational therapy and social work, as well as through the care implemented by the multidisciplinary team in the home environment of the patients involved in the study and its description including an analysis of drawbacks and positives.
