PROSODIC PECULIARITIES OF DISCURSIVE STRATEGIES IN ENGLISH ECONOMIC DISCOURSE: THE STRATEGY OF SOLUTION SEARCH
Abstract
One of the main aims of economic professional discourse is to achieve the goals set by business circles, financial institutions, banks and other economic organisations. The range of verbal means fulfilling these goals is an object of thorough analysis of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, pragmatics and discourse studies. In this context the sphere of prosody is of special interest for linguistic research, as, according to researchers, around 30% of information is transmitted with the help of intonation. The purpose of the present paper is to describe the prosodic peculiarities of the strategy of solution search applied in English economic discourse and to analyse how intonation benefits to more effective speech impact. Research was carried out by methods of continuous sampling, functional and auditorial intonation analysis. Excerpts from the speech of representatives of international economic organisations and businessmen served as empirical basis for the study. As a result of the study the following tactics realizing the solution search strategy were singled out: brainstorming, getting support, opinion expression, request, specification, agreement and offer. The following prosodic peculiarities are characteristic of these tactics: word-by-word emphasis, marked localization of nucleus, prosodic emphasis of personal pronouns. The strategy in general is characterised by short intonation groups, high and middle tone level, prevailing narrow and middle range, a large number of high falling terminal tones. The functions of intonation in realization of the abovementioned strategy are: expressive, pragmatic, constitutive and distinctive. The range of prosodic means corresponding to specific tactics is preconditioned by the necessity of varying the degree of pragmatic impact, formality / informality of communication, the degree of categoricalness. These are the skills essential for any register of professional communication. That is why the results of this research can be used in practical training of economists and businessmen, as well as in theoretical courses in English for Specific Purposes, phonetics, speech pragmatics.
