The goal of the research is to present specific themes and subjects of church painting in Orthodox Vyatka (now Kirov region) in Russia. The article analyses the role of light in Russian avant-garde. Light, as the most important pictorial and expressive mean of art, is analyzed in the visual art of the beginning of the twentieth century.
