SPECIFIC THEMES AND SUBJECTS OF CHURCH PAINTING IN VYATKA
Abstract
The goal of the research is to present specific themes and subjects of church painting in Orthodox Vyatka (now Kirov region) in Russia. The specificities of Vyatka church paintings are connected with depiction of local saints such as St. Tryphon (1546–1612) and blissful St. Procopius of Vyatka (1578–1627). Their early images preserved on icons of the 17th –18thcenturies. The diverse iconography has more than 20 subjects. It includes personal dedications and hagiographic cycles of saints. This is an important part of the cultural heritage of the region. The research methods include expeditionary and archival stages, iconographic and stylistic analysis of church paintings. This research is important because of its impact on the cultural, educational and touristic spheres. It also helps expand knowledge about provincial religious art in Russia.
