Abstract

The review of the painting The Flight into Egypt by the Brazilian artist Almeida Jr, takes into account its relationship with works of religious themes, most of them of idealistic and neoclassical inspiration that typically existed in the Brazilian Fine Arts Imperial Academy, and were performed by the artist between 1869 and 1874; it also considers the influence of European artworks of non-religious themes, from Renaissance to Baroque and from Realism to Impressionism. These works of art were accessible to the artist at museums, fairs and art exhibitions in Paris, where he lived from 1876 to 1881. Both the previous preparatory period in Brazil and the studies in France have helped the implementation of the historical painting in Paris, which was later offered to the Brazilian emperor Dom Pedro II when the artist returned to Brazil.
