The description of a vineyard in the Hebrew Scripture gives us an accurate picture of a vineyard in Old Israel but also of a vineyard as metaphor. Grapes and wine are metaphors for the relationship between God and Israel, the Torah as Word of God, instruction and Covenant and their implications. Yavne, a Hebrew centre for instruction and rabbinic authority, is mentioned in the Babylonian Talmud most often referring to rabbis who taught in the „vineyard of Yavne".
