Abstract

The description of a vineyard in the Hebrew Scripture gives us an accurate picture of a vineyard in Old Israel but also of a vineyard as metaphor. Grapes and wine are metaphors for the relationship between God and Israel, the Torah as Word of God, instruction and Covenant and their implications. Yavne, a Hebrew centre for instruction and rabbinic authority, is mentioned in the Babylonian Talmud most often referring to rabbis who taught in the „vineyard of Yavne". Moreover, the space intended for scholars meetings are often called „house of learning”, „vineyard” or „Garden”. The metaphor of the vineyard, referring to the wise men that intermediate the knowledge for another, it is quite common in the Talmud. Therefore, both assumptions of reality vineyard as an annex to a training institution and metaphor of the vineyard as well-organized training system can be identified in the Hebrew biblical and extra-biblical tradition.
