EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE OF FEMALE AND MALE MANAGERS AND ASSESSMENT OF OCCURRENCE OF COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS IN MANAGERIAL WORK
Abstract
Occurrence of cognitive distortions in managerial work relates to the objective conditions of this work but also to the subjective characteristics of managers. In this context, the presented paper focuses on the analysis of gender specifics of the links between the attributes of emotional intelligence of managers and assessment of the occurrence of cognitive distortions of managers. Data were collected from 67 female and 80 male managers using the methodologies TEIQue (emotional intelligence) and PCD18 (occurrence of cognitive distortions). Mathematical and statistical analyses of the data confirmed the existence of gender differences in the occurrence of statistically significant correlations between the factors of emotional intelligence and attributes of the assessment of occurrence of cognitive distortions. In the group of female managers, the analysis confirmed the existence of three negative correlations. The female managers, who scored higher in the emotional intelligence attributes of Empathy, Emotion control and the aggregate indicator of Sociability, also scored low in the factor of Argumentation through emotions. Contrarily, in the group of male managers, two positive correlations were found. Male managers, who scored higher in the emotional intelligence attributes of Emotion expression and the aggregate factor of Emotionality, also scored higher in the cognitive distortions occurrence factor of Argumentation through emotions. These managers consider emotions crucial to the decision made, and sometimes decide solely on the basis of emotions. The acquired results confirmed not only the reasonableness of examining the links between emotional intelligence and the occurrence of cognitive distortions in terms of gender specifics but, from the methodological point of view, they also contributed to the verification of an original methodology PCD18.
