COMPARISONS WITH A COMPONENT DESIGNATING HUMANВ’S PROFESSION AND OCCUPATION (BASED ON LATVIAN AND RUSSIAN MATERIAL)

Abstract

{{The aim of the present study}} is to trace the logic of selection and the specificity of the actualization of the names of professions as a basis of comparison (the component, to which something is compared) on the Russian and Latvian literary material. {{The material of the study}} is the comparisons used by two chronologically and thematically related writers – Anna Brigadere (1861 – 1933) and Ivan Shmelev (1873 – 1950). The Latvian writer and playwright A. Brigadere surprisingly actively introduces comparative constructions into her texts of different genres and thematics. It should be emphasized that the card-index of comparisons elicited from this author’s works includes more than 4 500 items, which makes it possible to draw the conclusion about comparison as A. Brigadere’s favourite stylistic device and an important feature of her idiostyle. Also the Russian thinker, writer and publicist I. Shmelev often applies comparisons, although the card-index of these constructions elicited from his works is somewhat more modest – it contains about 3 000 units. {{Research methods}}: the descriptive method, the comparative-contrastive method, the method of systematization of linguistic material, the statistical method. {{Results:}} such comparisons demonstrate the relationship between the object and the basis of the comparison depending on the actions both the components perform and on the human’s behavioural attitudes, his/her characteristic features, skills and abilities. The diversity of professions (29) and professional spheres (11) reveal the idealizaton of separate occupations and their representatives.
