EXPLORING THE INTERSECTION OF PAINTING, MUSIC, AND COGNITIVE SCIENCE TO IMPROVE STUDENT FOCUS
Abstract
This study reports an exploratory experiment at the intersection of painting, music, and cognitive science, examining whether multimodal creative exercises can enhance students’ focus. In a context of pervasive digital stimulation and shrinking attention spans, improving sustained concentration remains central to artistic practice and learning. Although music has been widely studied in relation to flow and cognition, painting has received comparatively less empirical attention outside therapeutic domains. Across approximately 2.5-hour studio sessions, twenty-five undergraduate students completed twelve 10-minute exercises translating auditory stimuli into purely pictorial elements—line, color, mark, gesture, value/light, texture, and composition—while avoiding recognizable forms. The curated instrumental sequence spanned rhythmic intensity to melodic suspension to elicit distinct perceptual responses. Findings indicate that combining auditory and visual modalities helps anchor attention dynamically, supporting sustained engagement comparable to patterns reported in musical improvisation [1]. While exploratory and without a control group, the approach suggests a viable pedagogical tool to strengthen attentional capacity and cognitive flexibility in art education, and it underscores the broader cognitive relevance of visual art.
