TUNGUS-MANCHU INFLUENCE ON PLACE NAMES OF CENTRAL YAKUTIA
Abstract
The toponymy of Yakutia is very complex, heterogeneous, and consists of many linguistic strata: Turkic, Tungus-Manchu, Mongolian and Russian. The paper is devoted to study the features of toponyms of Tungus-Manchu origin (Evenk) in Central Yakutia. The comprehensive analysis of the place names data base allows to identify the peculiarities of formation, evolution, interaction and using of these toponyms in Yakutia. Toponymic analysis shows to observe the ancient settlement of indigenous people, the features of their historical contacts, migration and assimilation, adaptation to the new sociocultural context. The toponyms of Evenk origin donВ’t have a special formant particle denoting river, lake, water. Evenk place names are formed by means of special suffixes, which are attached to the basis of name of animal or plant, minerals, relief geographical features in a given area. In the places where the other ethnic groups came to replace Evenk the toponyms were adapted to the phonetic norms of the alien languages, e.g. Yakut. But there are some affixes forming toponyms didnВ’t change phonetically, and the toponyms formed by them are found throughout the territory of the settlement of Evenk people.
