REPRESENTATIONS ABOUT PROFESSIONAL SUCCESS OF RUSSIAN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN CONNECTION WITH THEIR VALUE-MOTIVATIONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Abstract
The results of the study of the content of representations about professional success and attitude towards it in connection with the professional motivation, purpose-in-life and value orientations of 90 students of the South-Russian universities are presented. The complex internal relations between the representations about professional success, values and professional motivation of the person are discussed. The orienting, motivating and evaluative functions of the representations about professional success are analyzed. The results of the study were obtained by means of methods of composition, content analysis and psychological testing (Osgood's Semantic Differential, C. Zamfir's Methods of Studying Motivation In Professional Activity modified by A. Rean, Purpose-In-Life Orientations (PILO) Test by D.A. Leontiev, Rokeach Value Survey) and proved by the application of statistical procedures. The correlation between the content and attitude components of the representations about professional success is established. It is shown that the predominance of internal professional motivation among students is associated with a primary understanding by them of professional success as serving people, the predominance of external negative motivation - with the representation about professional success as a career and rank advancement. The connection between the representations about professional success with the respondents' purpose-in-life orientations has been identified: high meaningfulness of the present period of life for students correlates with the understanding of the professional success as a career advancement, dissatisfaction with the present - with the representation about professional success as a reliable basis for family well-being, belief in the meaningless of planning and control of life events - with a dominance in the representations about professional success of the theme of material well-being and financial independence. The students' preference of the public recognition values, happiness of others and material well-being is directly reflected in the relevant content of their representations about professional success. The high productivity of the activity is the leading content component of the representations about the professional success of students focused on the value of others' happiness, and the value preferences of love and wisdom in life devalue the financial component in these representations. The obtained results broaden the field of scientific representations about the correlation of the phenomena of professional consciousness, value-semantic and motivational spheres of the person, and are significant for the practice of career guidance and counseling on career development of the individual.
