Abstract

This article explores a significant cartographic achievement by John Amos Comenius, his map of Moravia that extends beyond the realm of education. Initially, the article will discuss the creator of the map, his life, sources of inspiration, educational contributions, and his significance for Moravia, where he was born, as well as the reasons for his exile. After that, we will focus on the significance of Comenius’s Map of Moravia. We will examine the historical background of the creation of the map in the 17th century, considering the political and social conditions of that era and possible motivations that prompted Comenius to create it. The section dedicated to the map’s technical aspects will offer an in-depth explanation of its creation process, including the engravings used and it will concentrate on the geographic features. Furthermore, we will explore how the map reflected the broader intellectual currents of the time. In conclusion, we will review the map’s relevance to Moravian history and culture and consider the lasting impact of John Amos Comenius’s work in today’s world. This article aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of Comenius’s contributions and their enduring legacy.
