NEGOTIATION WITH PROBLEM ADOLESCENTS

Abstract

The article is devoted to analysis of the specific of negotiation between adults and adolescents in conflicts connected with teenagersВ’ misbehavior in different social situations. These are the surveyВ’s results and practical counselling and mediation experiences presented in the article. Possibilities to negotiate difficult issues between teenagers and their peers, teenagers and adults depending on their age, education, experience and gender were explored. The factors of negotiationsВ’ failure and success have been revealed. It was shown that adults with different amount of experience of counteraction and negotiation with teenagers and different categories of teenagers differ in their relation to possibility and efficiency of negotiating with adolescents. The fact that adultsВ’ opinions about teenagersВ’ preferences and views on their negotiations with different types of partners do not match the teenagersВ’ estimation of theirs efficiency has been revealed. The survey allowed identifying significant preconditions of getting durable agreements with problem adolescents. The survey in which the significant amount of participants took part approved that negotiating with teenagers is possible and can be efficient. Moreover, the teenagers who took part in the research expressed a desire to develop negotiation skills. The survey results and conclusions have been approved by the practical experiences of counsellors and mediators working with adolescents from dysfunctional families having behavioral and educational problems. This appeared that conflicts involving teenagers at schools, in families and even connected with offensive behavior can be resolved using mediation and collaborative negotiation.
