RESPONSIVE ARCHITECTURE AS THE FIRST STEP TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE DESIGN ON EXAMPLE OF EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE WROCLAW 2016 PROJECT OF MODEL HOUSING ESTATE
Abstract
Nowadays password 'sustainable development', for all the validity of the idea became fashionable slogan, because its actual, highly demanding requirements imposed are often impossible to apply from day to day in economic, technological and legal context of a particular country. Responsive architecture is the first step towards sustainable design, when the architect takes into account the status quo and makes decisions on basis of the analysis of current, available technological possibilities and financial capabilities, considering the degree of social consciousness. To what extent architecture will be responsive depends on the group of factors, which the author wants to discuss in his article from the point of view of a practising architect, who at the same time is a researcher and a tutor of housing design. The discussion is based on a qualitative assessment of the experimental housing estate “Nowe Zerniki”, also called WUWA2, which the author is a co-designer. The project of the experimental housing estate is being prepared for the European Capital of Culture (in Polish ESK) 2016, granted to Wroclaw, Poland. The estate is meant to be a model project, designed as a whole from the urban plan to individual buildings and greenery. Its development is to be an ideological continuation of the modernist predecessor WUWA, the 'living and workplace exhibition' (Wohnung und Werkraum Ausstellung) held in prewar Wroclaw – Breslau in 1929, where for the first time group of modernist architects applied consultations with prospective users, presenting them new building technologies, functional solutions and aesthetics. Contemporary model housing estate WUWA2 is a good example of architecture, whose creators were trying to respond to the highest possible extent to the needs of our times keeping in mind the principles of sustainable development, and shows dependency of such a process and its final 'product' – a building - on factors to be discussed in this article.
