INNOVATIVE WAY OF RAISING MEDIA LITERACY. PROJECT MEDIA JOURNEY: FROM CAVE TO VIRTUAL REALITY
Abstract
The aim of media education is to increase individual and social awareness of media, show how media work, how they influence the audience and also how to use them. Such education can take place at informal and formal (school) levels. In both cases, there is an intentional educational effect on individuals with the objective to give them the tools to receive media content and decode, analyse and evaluate it. Through media education, individuals come to recognise the forms of media communication and they should learn how to communicate in these formats responsibly. Responsibility in this case involves own personalities, their surroundings and the society they live in. Media literacy is part of the key competencies of the 21st century European citizen. The implementation into the process of media education depends on the setting of internal environmental factors of individual countries. During the last decade Slovakia has significantly reinforced the fields of formal and informal media education and has won several awards for an attractive and innovative approach to media competencies improvement. The aim of the paper is to introduce the latest inspiring university project From Cave to Virtual Reality that suitably complements the set of good practice examples in practical media education.
