Abstract

Monument has accompanied architecture for ages. From the first civilizations to the twentieth century people erected buildings related to memory, religion or politics, giving them an appropriately serious/solemn style. They expressed social and cultural aspirations. Today, there are no styles and rules in architecture. Yet, we still need to express the greatness, dignity and uniqueness, arousing awe and admiration for buildings. Hence the monumental architecture probably still exists. The subject of research concerns contemporary architectural works with monumental characteristics in contemporary city structure. It is believed that we can describe their specific architectural form and their role in city structure. In the past they probably played an important role in the city structure, they were the beginning of a new block or district, sometimes being its most important building. It seems that, these rules also apply nowadays. However, does the frequent lack of city building rules exclude monuments from the world of architecture? There is search for relationships between symbolism, function and architectural form. Therefore, architectural form should be regarded as a basis for research and the field is the contemporary architecture. This work is an attempt to answer a series of questions: does a contemporary monumental architecture exist? Is the monument associated with the context? Is the monument a matter of scale (size of the object in relation to the background)? What is its role in contemporary city structure?
