COMPARATIVE STUDY OF POLITICAL METAPHORS: A METHODS OVERVIEW
Abstract
Comparison of metaphors in various national discourses is one of the most dynamic research areas that aims at unveiling the interplay between the increasing globalization of the metaphorical toolkit and the drive for the preservation of cultural identity and national traditions. We analyzed over 300 publications devoted to the comparative analysis of political metaphors and revealed the following approaches: (1) comparison of original metaphors and translations thereof, (2) parallel comparison of metaphors with a common target domain, (3) parallel comparison of metaphors with a common source domain, (4) consecutive comparison of metaphors with a common source domain, (5) contrastive description of a metaphorical model in a certain language and of its peer in a different language, and (6) cognitive-dominant and discourse-dominant comparative approaches. Each of these techniques has a validity of its own and they all contribute to valuable and complementary research findings. Future studies in this area should focus on the development of a full catalogue of the methods used to compare political metaphors and identification of the factors that affect the researcherВ’s choice of a specific approach.
