HIGHER EDUCATION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Abstract
Under the conditions of global business and permanently growing Information technology (IT) sector, Information Systems (IS) have gained a very important role for companies in order to support their operations, data organization and communications, coordinate decision-making processes and business management as a general rule. There may be differences among IS education programs due to the fact that both technical and business colleges offer Information Systems courses and degrees. IS education goes beyond software and hardware, is a bridge between business and computer science and includes a wider spectrum while trying to cover the big-picture. Some of the objectives included in IS programs are more business-related, therefore graduates can have a solid comprehension of how to consider and resolve practical problems and situations using a diversity of tools and specific methods. In the present article, we review the important role and evolution of major professional societies in maintaining and updating the IS curricula, their influence over the higher education IS programs developed by institutions all over the world for the internationalization of IS competences.
