PRACTICAL ECUMENISM OF THE ART OF BORDERLINE
Abstract
The existence of many cultures and religions is a fascinating phenomenon which continuously raises questions. This is an inspiring phenomenon, stimulating intellect and emotions. This is a phenomenon which reveals old conflicts as well as instills joy and hope. In the past, all religions were isolated from each other and their convergence was impossible. Today, more and more often, their authentic interest in each other can be noticed. To a higher degree than in the past, symptoms of a mutual exchange of ideas and values, forms of cult and artistic expression may be observed in architecture and fine arts. Are they the very first symptoms of an ecumenical meeting? Is this “a meeting in truth and love”, as postulated by the religions? May spiritual architecture, architecture of worship and memory, architecture of temples be a spiritual setting for this meeting? The Author reviews the past and present examples of the conversions and diffusion of values in the sacred, especially Christian, art and architecture. They are portrayed through mutual conversion of temples, incorporation of traditional orthodox iconography in contemporary Roman Catholic churches as well as by adaptation of historic temples for their mutual ecumenical use. The values give testimony to the synthesis of art of both Christian Churches as well as to the return to their ecclesial unity. Those examples are representative for the architecture of cultural borderland, which attempts to synthesize both Western and Eastern Christian art.
