CONSUMPTION OF FISH AND SEA PRODUCTS IN LATVIA

Abstract

Fish is not only a significant part of aquatic ecosystem, but also a delicious and valuable product, in addition, a rich source of protein, and an important source of subsistence for fisheries men. In Latvia, there are long standing fishing, fish breeding and culinary traditions, simultaneously playing a significant role in the social and economic development of Latvia and establishment of its cultural and historical heritage. Nowadays competitiveness of companies is determined by their ability to understand consumersВ’ choice and thus predicting market development tendencies. The aim of the study is to find out the consumption of fish and sea products and the factors influencing them in Latvia, at the same time providing suggestions to facilitate the consumption. Grounding on the indicators, determined by the availability and quality of data, identified by the author there was performed a corresponding evaluation. The study results showed the consumption of fish and sea products in the cities and rural areas of Latvia, and according to different product groups. Moreover, the study identified consumer desires and the main factors influencing the consumption. The results of the study may help to forecast market development tendencies, understand consumer behaviour and desires. The acquired results provide an opportunity to the entrepreneurs to better plan their business possibilities and future prospects.
