AN OVERVIEW OF THE ROMANIAN RENEWABLE ENERGY MARKET
Abstract
The transition towards renewable energy sources has become a global imperative in the face of climate change and depleting fossil fuel reserves. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the Romanian renewable energy market, examining its historical evolution, current state, policy and regulatory landscape, key market players, technological advancements, economic and environmental impacts, challenges, and prospects. Romania's journey in embracing renewable energy began with early policy initiatives and has since witnessed remarkable growth in installed capacity and energy production from various renewable sources. The country's policy framework, including feed-in tariffs and subsidies, has played a pivotal role in attracting investments and fostering a diverse range of renewable energy projects. However, the Romanian renewable energy market is not devoid of challenges. Integration into the grid, financing constraints, and infrastructure development pose significant hurdles. Despite these obstacles, the market holds promising prospects for future expansion and growth, with untapped potential in emerging technologies and strategic collaborations. By analysing successful projects, the paper highlights valuable insights and lessons that can guide the country's continued transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. In comparative context, the Romanian renewable energy market is evaluated alongside other European counterparts, revealing both strengths and areas for improvement. The findings underscore the importance of continued policy support, technological innovation, and international cooperation to ensure the long-term viability and success of the Romanian renewable energy market. As the world moves towards a low-carbon future, this study contributes a holistic understanding of Romania's role in the global renewable energy landscape.
