GEOTECHNICAL LABORATORY TESTING FIELD AS A TOOL FOR SUSTAINABLE DESIGN OF SOIL AND UNBOUND PAVEMENT STRUCTURES
Abstract
Sustainable both rural and urban roads need appropriate engineering design. Behavior of pavement unbound layers and subsoil can be predicted within either standardized laboratory tests or tests in situ. The first option brings inexactness caused by sampling and test presumptions. The second one takes lot of time and money and in case of reconstruction blockades traffic which is often unacceptable mainly in urban areas. Full-scale laboratory testing can bring useful combination of both of approaches, i.e. tests are done in controlled laboratory environment but on realistic structures. The paper introduces the Geotechnical Laboratory Testing Field (GLTF), a facility available for full-scale geotechnical tests, which allows in a laboratory to measure some of the geotechnical quantities that are otherwise usually measured in the field (e.g. static plate test, dynamic loading test, penetration test, etc.) on various soils and soil layers for different compaction rate and for different water regimes. The facility has been constructed in premises of the CDV – Transport Research Centre.
