VALUES AND LIFE SATISFACTION: EMPIRICAL EVIDENCE FROM BULGARIA
Abstract
This article aims to analyse the relation between individual values and satisfaction of life that can be seen not only as personal constructs, but also as indicators of social processes in Bulgaria. It presents the results from an empirical research conducted in 2015-2016 among 1913 Bulgarian citizens of active working age 18-65 y.o. Some of the most complex methods in the social sciences to study values and life satisfaction, such as Schwartz Value Survey, SVS [14] and Satisfaction With Life Scale, SWLS [4] have been applied. Through use of contrast groups, it is found that compared with those with lower SWLS score, persons with high life satisfaction attribute greater significance to both collective and individual oriented values. These findings are also supported by the correlation analysis and fits the explanatory model of Maslows pyramid of needs [8] and the perspective of congruence of values [13]. In other words, the correspondence of individual values and dominant norms in the environment makes it possible to achieve personal goals and strengthens cognitive well-being.
