Abstract

Today, much of the power of computation comes not only from digitality, but from the ability of computers to ‘represent’ things. So that as it always be in the past, nowadays representation still has a potential to create its own world. In contradiction to engineers who implement digitality as ‘know it when they see it’, the philosophy of representation offers more complicated and multiple meaning to it. This way of thinking gives us opportunity of rethinking about the design and its representation. Digitality can be thought of as a convergence between the encoding and content of information, and representation as information with a non-local content. With the aim of understanding how the abstraction and representation can change the perception of architecture, a workshop was conducted in scope of “digital representation techniques in interior architecture” course in Istanbul Technical University-Faculty of Architecture. Method of the study was defined with 3 steps. In the first step, participants used 2d presentations or drawings of the selected buildings as a starting point, and in the second step, they deformed the 2d surfaces to 3d volumes by using Rhino and Grasshopper softwares. In the final step, the designers were asked to represent volumetric abstraction of the chosen buildings. Digitality is used to change the existing presentations of the buildings into different circumstances in which the final work opened new windows to representation phenomenon. It is obvious that every experiment had a potential to extend the meaning and way of seeing and understanding architecture.
