DECOMPOSITION OF SIGNS IN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
Abstract
Throughout its history, architecture has been created according to the signs memorised for years. From the time of Vitruvius and his theory to the beginning of the twentieth century, buildings were given a perfect shape corresponding to their function. Banks and governmental buildings were to be monumental, the rulersВ’ seats to intimidate the subjects with their splendour. The great avant-garde of the early twentieth century liberates art and architecture from memorised patterns. The contemporary world changes the attitudes of patrons to art and architecture. Architecture is to become unique like other arts. Hence, it must abandon the past and seek new signs. However, these signs are different than before. They are to shock and not to be suitable for simple copying. Although it is still admired, the Greek column, regarded as ideal for millennia, cannot be a determinant of contemporary art. Building aims at absolute novelty and a new unique expression of architecture and its new signs.
