CULTURE STUDIES IN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHING ON THE EXAMPLE OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC
Abstract
A contemporary multicultural society needs multiculturally educated teachers who are able to pass on their knowledge to the pupils. Teaching foreign languages should educate individuals not only from the linguistic point of view but also in cultural terms. Culture is a specific feature of every country. It includes music, paintings, sculptures, films, architecture, etc. The presence of the Culture Studies in teaching foreign languages develops three basic levels: pupils' empathy and understanding, factual knowledge and last but not the least communicative foreign language functions. We believe that Cultural Studies belong to one of the essential components in foreign language teaching (FLT) and it significantly enriches the teaching and learning processes. The paper tries to outline the presence of the Cultural Studies in foreign language lessons in the Czech Republic. Presuming that the Cultural Studies are essential parts in foreign language lessons, we conducted a questionnaire survey on 100 foreign language teachers. Firstly, we examined to what extent the foreign language teachers work with texts and supplementary teaching materials that contain cultural themes. Secondly, we investigated if any differences exist among the teachers specialized in various foreign languages such as English, German, Russian and French. Thirdly, we asked the teachers about their preferences when selecting the teaching/learning material resources.
