FOREIGN ACCESSORY MORPHEMES IN YUKAGHIR: A YAKUT WORD-BUILDING AFFIX -LAA
Abstract
The article deals with alien linguistic phenomena as one of the actual and poor studied aspects of the Tundra Yukaghir language spoken by people of the exremely small ethnic group in Yakutia, Russia. Available statistics as a result of the analysis of a corpus allows detecting over nine hundred lexical units transferred to Yukaghir from Koryak, Chukchi, Evenki, Evens, Yakut and Russian languages. Moreover, Yukaghir borrowed some affixes that assist in word-formation and inflection. The author describes the peculiarities of functioning of the affix -laa, borrowed from Yakut for building multilingual compound verbs, evidenced by examples of the bilingual corpus documented at different times. The mutual attraction of the stem and affix, both originated from different donor languages, is noted as the specific feature of the verb expressions under study. There is an attempt to determine a status of the verbs with -laa as a phenomenon of code-mixing via a criterion of frequency in the speech community. The article contributes to actual issues of interactions between the contact languages in North-Eastern Siberia and compatibility pattern of morphemes in the word-building processes in Yukaghir.
