ANGLICISMS IN ROMANIAN INTELLIGENCE DISCOURSE: LINGUISTIC ADAPTATION AND OPERATIONAL IMPACT
Abstract
This paper investigates the role and evolution of Anglicisms in Romanian intelligence discourse, focusing on their linguistic adaptation and operational significance. The research is grounded in a lexicographic project initiated with the publication of a bilingual English–Romanian intelligence dictionary and currently expanded through the development of a second, annotated dictionary offering semantic, contextual, and functional explanations. These resources serve as both corpus and analytical framework for identifying patterns of lexical borrowing and integration. Drawing from over a hundred terms, the study analyzes how English-origin words have been phonologically, morphologically, syntactically, and semantically adapted to fit Romanian professional usage within the intelligence sector. Emphasis is placed on the interplay between international cooperation, institutional translation practices, and the adoption of globalized terminology, revealing how Anglicisms contribute to operational clarity, interoperability, and terminological precision. At the same time, the paper critically addresses the tension between linguistic innovation and preservation, highlighting the implications for Romanian linguistic identity and policy-making in terminology standardization. The findings underscore the importance of controlled, context-sensitive adaptation, as well as the need for consistent translation strategies within intelligence communication. This contribution advances scholarly dialogue in applied linguistics, translation studies, and security communication, offering both a descriptive and normative perspective on the evolving lexicon of Romanian intelligence discourse.
