ENERGY-EFFICIENT SOLUTIONS FOR DENSE URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

The areas which are heavily urbanized, including densely developed districts, limited open spaces and biologically active areas, provide a special environmental context, as well as increased pollution and emission of heat generated by human activity. The climatic factors undergo transformation (e.g. shading, changed directions of wind caused by buildings, the phenomenon of the urban heat island). There are various building needs in the scope of the development of their interior microclimate, for instance, problems with cooling and intensification of natural ventilation are more significant than it is the case in less urbanized areas. Such issues are also more complicated to solve. This paper deals with the issue of possibilities and limitations of energy-efficient solutions applications in the buildings situated in the dense urban development. The main goal is to analyze energy-efficient solutions used by contemporary architecture from the perspective of their possible implementation in city buildings. A distinction was made between solutions best adapted to city conditions, those that have to be modified to match these conditions and those that appear inadaptable or inopportune for implementation under these conditions.
