SOME IMPLICATIONS OF FOOD CONSUMPTION ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN THE EUROPEAN UNION
Abstract
The impact of the food sector on achieving the sustainable development goals is increasingly debated worldwide amid growing climate change effects and on the background of a lack of quickly responses on mitigating them. Initially, the state of the art is quantitatively analyzed for emphasizing the scientific evolution on food consumption in the context of sustainability and the main themes discussed by researchers. Further, several indicators on food consumption expenditures, daily calorie supply, emissions, waste are investigated at EU level by using secondary data analysis. The data is collected from Eurostat and Faostat and it allows the comparison of these indicators in time and space. Overall, some results indicate reductions of greenhouse gas emissions from fuel combustion in the food, beverages and tobacco manufacturing, small increases of the area under organic farming, and rises of daily calorie supply per capita. However, the statistics is different on each member state. Finally, the paper suggests the critical points generated by each indicator.
