SHIFTING EDUCATIONAL PARADIGM: ONLINE ARABIC LEARNING
Abstract
Online education has become a widespread phenomenon, the dynamic development of which contributes to global educated community formation. The paper reviews changes in educational paradigm that took place in the last decades. These changes concern role of online learning in the present-day society and technologies used for its implementation. Online language learning requires special methodological and technological solutions. The concept of online learning for the Arabic language is fundamentally different from the analogues, since it has features relating primarily to graphics and phonetics. The paper reviews issues dedicated to peculiarities of the development and implementation of the Arabic language online course from one side and modern tendencies in education worldwide – from the other. Besides that, content analysis of Coursera (that has 33 million registered and offers more than 2,800 online courses) allows to define the proportion of language courses contained on this platform. Despite the thousands of courses hosted on the platform, oriental language online courses still need additional development, as far as we found only one course, dedicated to Arabic. Probably this fact maybe explained by difficulties in the oriental languages formalization as well as by the methodological issues. The online course on the Arabic language, developed by the authors and opened in February 2018 (https://openedu.ru/course/spbu/ARBLNG/), allowed to draw conclusions concerning the peculiarities of the implementation of this training format in comparison with traditional classroom instruction. The course enrolled more than 13,000 thousand listeners. This fact allows to give an objective assessment of the effectiveness of this kind of language learning and to formulate key methodological aspects that should be taken into account when developing language online courses.
