Abstract

Objectives: In this study the relationship between social skills and behavioral problems in secondary school students was examined. In addition, the gender differences between these variables were investigated. The main aim of the study was to analyze the relation between the social and emotional competencies and behavioral problems. Furthermore, the prognostic role of social and emotional competencies in the prevalence of problematic behavior was analyzed. Methods: Participants were selected from a Hungarian minority group of 189 students in Romania (N=192), aged between 10-14 years. Male (N=94) and female (N=98) participants completed the CBCL self-report version, measuring youth behavior, and the SECQ for the social and emotional competencies. These instruments have high reliability, CBCLВ’s ?=.87, and the SECQВ’s ?=.88. Results: Results indicated that participants who had poorer social and emotional competencies scored higher on the CBCLВ’s externalizing behavior problems subscale. According to the results, negative relation was found between the general social and emotional competencies score and total problems score (r=-.34), the highest negative correlation (r=-.41) was found between the relationship management and the externalizing behavior. Further results will be discussed in the paper, which can be a starting point to future studies in this domain. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that there is a negative relation between social emotional competencies and behavioral problems yet, the examination of these variables is required to create intervention. These results can be used in educational and clinical domains.
