Abstract

Romanian Doina was inscribed on the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. Doina is a improvised, solemn and lyrical folkloric song, marking the essence of Romanian folklore. It can be sung in any social context, with or without instrumental accompaniment, with expressive ornaments. The emotional magnitude is very impressive. There are various regional types of doina, with different specific elements. Doina is representative for the peasant’s soul, expressing his most intense and mysterious emotions. Doina is a song passed down orally from generation to generation, it preserves the authentic values of the Romanian people over the centuries. That’s why it’s so important to know and make known the Doina – an authentic Romanian peasant’s value. The melodic analysis is very complex, and we can draw same contexts in which doina appears in the Romanian modern musical environment (from George Enescu’s generation to contemporary composers). We analyze more melodic archetypes and even their links with the Byzantine (Orthodox) music. We conclude that Doina is an important element of ancient and current Romanian music. Doina must investigated in light of European multiculturalism as a mark of the individuality of Romanian national profile.
