WORK AND PRIVATE LIFE BALANCE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VARIOUS GENERATIONS IN THE SERVICES SECTOR IN LATVIA
Abstract
A successful balance between work and private life provides benefits to employees and companies. Employees are an essential resource in the companies operating in the business sector, and, according to the long-term estimates in the labour market, the services sector will continue to develop in Latvia in the future as well, and, consequently, there will also be a demand for human resources. The aim of the research study: To study work and private life balance differences between various generations of the personnel in the services sector in Latvia and to develop recommendations for the human resource managers and employers in the services sector in order to improve the balance between work and private life among the personnel. The research questions were the following: Do the baby-boomers, the X and Y generation feel an overall satisfaction with the balance between their work and private life? What helps various generations of the personnel maintain a balance between work and private life? Are there statistically significant differences between the feeling of balance between work and private life between the baby-boomers, the X and Y generations? In the study, based on an analysis of scientific sources, the authors developed a survey with three scales: Supervisor Support Scale; Job Satisfaction and Private Life Balance Scale; Work Overload Scale. Main conclusions: employees of various generations have a feeling of overall satisfaction with their work and private life balance; the key factors in the improvement of the balance between work and private life are the social factors, i.e., support from the family, partner, spouse, colleagues, and individual factors, such as the individual ability to tackle the duties at work and in the family. Identification of the needs of the employees with regard to the balance between their work and private life may support the implementation of solutions which meet the needs of the employees and, consequently, also assure higher levels of satisfaction among the employees with regard to the opportunities for combining their work and private life needs.
