ALEXIS PRELLER’S DISCOVERY – THE SEA ROUTE AROUND AFRICA
Abstract
Alexis Preller’s mural Discovery (1959–62), commissioned in 1959 for the Nicol Conference Hall in central Pretoria, offers a visually striking interpretation of the historic discovery of the sea route around Africa in the late 15th century. This impressive oil painting skillfully combines historical narrative with symbolic artistry. It draws inspiration from the era of Portuguese navigators and explorers, such as Vasco da Gama, as well as the rich diversity of the African continent. This period marked a significant turning point in global trade and exploration. The mural traces a journey from the African coasts into the vast interior of the continent. Preller masterfully integrates representations of Africa’s diverse peoples and the vibrant biodiversity of its flora and fauna, linking the past and present through innovative composition and vivid, jewel-like colours. Central motifs, such as the guiding star and dynamic birdlife, serve not only as focal points but also as metaphors for the daring age of exploration and interconnectedness. The mural’s expansive scale, meticulous craftsmanship, and thoughtful arrangement of visual elements provide viewers with an engaging journey across time, space, and geography. By juxtaposing the legacy of 15th-century explorers with imaginative references to modern discovery, Preller’s painting challenges the conventional boundaries between historical documentation and creative expression. This paper examines the artistic, technical, and thematic aspects of “Discovery,” situating the mural within broader narratives of African topography, cultural identity, and the enduring fascination with journeys—both literal and symbolic.
