IMPACT OF MUSIC ON SECOND LANGUAGE TEACHING IN DIFFERENT LEVEL OF EDUCATION. A COMPARING STUDY.

Abstract

Speech, language and music have much in common. Training in listening affects the perception and recognition of speech and language prosodic properties. Prosodic features of the second language learnt can be very well implemented through music. There are numerous ways in which music can be integrated in the process of the second language teaching. The presented study investigated the issue of the impact of music in the process of teaching the second language to learners of different age levels in the Czech Republic. The author compares different foreign languages i.e. English, German, French and Russian and then discusses the role of music and its benefit for the second language lessons. Current didactics of foreign languages provides only limited number of teaching methods which include music in foreign language classes. Some kinds of comparative analysis are presented – the processes applied when teaching different age levels of learners and when teaching different languages were compared and the differences were identified. Our research revealed that relatively big differences appear when the ways of teaching different foreign languages are compared, and that the learners’ age plays a very important role when the involvement of music in the process of teaching foreign languages is considered.
