RISK TAKING AMONG YOUNG DRIVERS AND CULTURAL VALUES
Abstract
Cultural differences have always been observed in the way that drivers act suggesting that in part, the cultural aspects could bring an insight into risky driving behaviors. Two hundred and five drivers from 3 countries (Morocco, N=30; France, N=87; Romania, N-=88) have taken part into an exploratory study aiming to analyze how various cultural values might have an impact on risky driving behavior and driving anger. Participants had in average 22 years (SD=2.12, min=18, max=25), had had their driving license for 3.22 years in average (SD=2.06, min=<1year, max=7 years) and reported, on average, less than one accident (65.3% of them had had no accident until the time of the study). All participants answered an online questionnaire comprising measures of values (Individual Values Scale, Schwartz 1992 and Value Survey Module, Hofstede 1984), of risky driving behaviors (Driving Behavior Questionnaire, violation scale, Reason, 1999), driving anger (Driving Anger Expression Inventory) and various socio-demographic information. Results show that some risky behaviors correlate with various cultural variables and that values might influence anger expression in drivers.
