Abstract

The conventional classification of play areas distinguishes three basic types (traditional, modern and adventure playground), which researchers all around the world analyse in terms of their attractiveness, opportunity to provide conditions for a proper development and safety of children. However, the evolution of play areas runs in two directions, towards finding an even more attractive playground equipment, and contrary to this, casting voices of their criticism. The result of this clash of opinions is several kinds of fun places that are present today, significantly extending beyond the existing division, which indicates the need to verify the current classification of playgrounds. The aim of the article is to indicate the basic and contemporary types of playgrounds, their classification, analysis of features and the indication of the most desirable solutions, both from a spatial and social point of view. The research was based on field-based studies, case analysis, and historical research. Considering the analysis of spatial features and opportunities for stimulating certain forms of play, it was found that the modern playground, in the form of a modern family playground, can play a valuable role in terms of both play and social aspects for children, and as such it is perceived as a desirable direction of the changes in playgrounds. Identification of solutions characterizing the contemporary family playground is the basis for the dissemination of this kind of play area as a model space for children.
