Abstract

Wroclaw University of Technology (WrUT) is one of the largest universities in Poland. In 2014 its authorities have announced a competition for the architectural concept of the new campus located on post-industrial areas. The article describes the project - the ef-fect of the work of architects from the Faculty of Architecture in WrUT. The project – related to sustainable development - is an attempt to express by architec-tural forms the university mission defined in its statute - innovation, interaction, imple-mentation. Innovation of the concept is reflected in proposed solutions: - technical (the campus is a plus-energy object and energy can supply other WrUT ob-jects, - ecological (using modern methods of rainwater management), - spatial (some of the rooms was designed as shared space, allowing to customize them for future needs or new technologies. Interactivity of the concept is manifested in: - the method of public spaces design that connect the research needs of WrUT staff and students with the promotion of science, - the dialogue of architectural forms, imposing on each other in different views showing different stages of the history of the place, - eco-technical solutions (heliostats and rotating solar panels, modern drainage systems). Implementation aspects of the concept manifests itself in the possibility of staging the investment and the laboratory and assembly space design enabling cooperation of WrUT researchers and the industry (Tower of Technology, multi-purpose research hall, track and testing ground for the vehicle crash tests, optional – mine simulators). The aim of the project was to create an object called Geo Flagship, that would meet the functional requirements of the users, create monumental buildings in downtown of the city, be one of the landscape dominants of Wroclaw and at the same time be an envi-ronmentally friendly object, designed in a sustainable way. For students it could present an example of architecture corresponding to the challenges of the future. The outcome of the project team was the spatial structure, not just an interesting formal-ly, but in practice, using the latest eco-technologies. The campus itself would be a re-search laboratory, and the functioning of its fragments could be served students as an example of how one can incorporate design ideas into reality. A series of landscape and functional analysis explains the form and complexity of the new spatial structure. The shape of Geo Flagship and public spaces created for its needs are designed as a generator of social interaction. The new WrUT sustainable campus is to develop a platform for joint action of the city, scientists, students and local industry. The aim of the designers was to prove that contemporary architecture should be more than just functional and fashionable form, it should embody the views, knowledge, re-search ideas and beliefs of the authors.
