USING UNREAL ENGINE 4 IN LINGUISTICS TO CREATE STANDALONE EDUCATIONAL APPLICATIONS
Abstract
Using Unreal Engine 4 in linguistics to create standalone educational applications Creating customized standalone applications is one of the current trends in business that also started to have its influence on the sphere of education. It offers a large variety of opportunities to linguists and language teachers alike. In this publication the author explored the untapped potential of the latest technology that became available to a very wide audience due to the recent rapid development of mobile graphics processing units. The findings of this research indicate that many undergraduate students nowadays possess such kind of technology that makes classroom equipment obsolete and often unnecessary. Even though the visual side will always play the secondary role in such domains as linguistics, it has its benefits and may help to expand the audience of certain projects as proven by a successful constructed language revival attempt, built from scratch in Unreal Engine 4 by the author and described in this publication with the inclusion of all the relevant analytical data. The research also includes a comparative analysis of various online and offline technologies that are popular in modern education, focusing on their disadvantages that can be overcome by using an engine capable of creating standalone applications, showcasing an educational startup project prototype aimed at foreign language learners.
