Abstract
The object of the research is the comparative study of French and Russian idiomatic phrases. The study of idiomatic phrases in the process of learning a foreign language is an important element in learning this language. The article presents the lexical-semantic analysis of idioms of French and Russian and explores the similarities and differences in the structure and semantics of idiomatic phrases in Russian and French. The authors discuss the expressiveness of idioms and cross-language equivalence, as well as international and national origin in the semantics of idiomatic phrases and their component structure. The study of idioms, especially comparative study helps to understand culture and life of different peoples, to learn effectively a foreign language and to translate them correctly. They present one type of the familiarizations for people who learn foreign languages, particularly French, to samples of expressive speech.
