INTERIOR RECONSTRUCTION OF THE NEONATOLOGY DEPARTMENT, ST. CYRIL ANDMETHOD HOSPITAL, BRATISLAVA - CASE STUDY
Abstract
The architectural solution of hospital facilities in Slovakia in recent decades is insufficiently saturation of patient and staff expectations. In the field of neonatal health care, the key response to the growing number of pre-term newborns is the key. In the last decade the number of pre-term newborns in Slovakia has increased by up to 30%. In many cases, stressful stimuli from the intensive care unit (noise, light, pain, insensitive manipulation and separation from the mother) cause the damage to many important brain structures, which may lead to cognitive and emotional disorders in premature babies in the future. Early parental intervention strategies along with behavioral nursing practices have helped improve the long-term prognosis of preterm infants from early days of intensive care. To improve the prognosis of premature babies not only in the short term, but in terms of long-term results, newer architectural tools need to be used in the design and reconstruction of neonatal departments. A unique architectural tool for the transformation of hospital departments supporting social inclusion is Family-centered care (FCC). The trend of improving the conditions for treating the patient affects architects to create an internal hospital environment for newborns when creating hospital departments, allowing the integration of parents into the healing process. The inclusion of parents in the child's treatment process has, in addition to the social, health, and economic impact on healthcare facilities. Despite the initial higher investment costs, the length of hospitalization and economic savings are shortened. When applying the method under our conditions, due to the legislative, material and personal uncer- tainty of healthcare facilities, it is necessary to apply at least in part procedures from abroad.
