APPROACHES TO THE TYPOLOGY OF UNIVERSITIES OF THE RUSSIAN MACRO-REGION

Abstract

In modern science there is a large number of typologies of universities. The most of them are linear, vertical. Typically, such typologies are based on quantitative characteristics. The rating of universities as one of the methods of their typologization is based on the same criteria. The Russian Federation today is divided into 8 macro-regions - federal districts, each of which has its own unique economic, political, cultural, social characteristics. The educational space of each of the macro-region has a number of features. Therefore, the author of the article came to the conclusion that it is necessary to form a fundamentally new typology of universities for each macro-region. The article includes the results of content-analysis of quantitative characteristics of universities of the Ural macro-region. The Ural Federal District includes all types of universities existing in modern Russia. And it is characterized by many quantitative characteristics, areas of training, industry, level of subordination. The sample included 51 universities. Data used for analysis were obtained from open sources - official web-sites of universities. The object of study are the universities of the Ural macro-region, the subject are their typology. The purpose of the article is to study the existing typologies and the possibilities for their application in the macro-regional educational space. The theoretical basis for the study are a model of the non-linear development of modern Russian higher education, as well as the concepts of the typology of universities, developed by Russian and foreign authors. The result of the analysis is the conclusion that the typologies of universities existing in modern science are poorly applicable to the macro-regional educational space because they do not take into account the specificity of each of them. On the basis of this, the author proposed own system of criteria for the development of the universities typology, which could effectively work for the macro-regional educational space.
