Abstract

The contribution focuses on literary phenomenon of bad mother in 21st century novels written by authors born in former GDR. Both selected novels deal with some kind of raven mother’s behaviour witnessed by the writer in person or conveyed by close relative of the writer showing how historical events might lead to refusal of the principal woman’s role – being mother. The long-term family as well as society disguised taboo is in the first novel “Back to Back” by Julia Franck’s composed only after grandmother’s death who acted as raven mother. Peter Wawerzinek’s novel “Bad Love” is a part of authors therapy to cope with the traumatic search for lost mother and especially emotionally stirring meeting during which the woman, non-mother, keeps refusing to admit her failure and guilt.
